From Industry to Consulting: Why Making the Switch Was the Best Career Move

Making the leap from industry to consulting can feel like stepping into the unknown. Will your skills still be relevant? Will the work be all theory and no action? In this article, and the video below, Frédérick Mainil shares his personal journey from working in industry to joining BrightWolves, the assumptions he had, and the surprising truths he discovered along the way.

When I first stepped into the world of consulting, I carried a suitcase full of assumptions. After a few years in the industry - selling, building, delivering - I thought I knew exactly what consultants did: short, fast-paced projects, endless travel, and an endless supply of PowerPoint slides.

I wasn’t entirely wrong… but I wasn’t right either.

Longer Projects, Bigger Impact

At BrightWolves, I discovered that the most meaningful growth often happens on mid- to long-term projects. Staying long enough with a client means you truly understand their company, almost as if it’s your own. You don’t just recommend; you get to implement change and see it through.

A Different Kind of Learning

Coming from industry, I wondered if consulting could teach me anything I hadn’t already experienced. The answer? Absolutely. Consulting broadens your perspective. You learn to solve unfamiliar problems quickly, across different industries and teams. You stretch your soft skills, challenge your assumptions, and grow faster than you thought possible.

Beyond the Slides

There’s a stereotype that consulting is all about PowerPoint. And yes, slides are a tool, but they’re not the job. The real work begins when we roll up our sleeves, co-create solutions with clients, and turn strategy into tangible results.

Your Industry Experience Is Your Strength

I feared I’d have to start from scratch in consulting. New jargon, new culture, new rules. But the truth is, your industry experience becomes your biggest asset. It helps you build trust, speak the client’s language, and bridge the gap between theory and practice. You’re not starting over, you’re starting stronger.

Work-Life Balance That Works

Another misconception? That consultants live on coffee and three hours of sleep. At BrightWolves, we take our work seriously, but we also value a healthy work-life balance. We believe you grow best when your work supports your life, not the other way around.

Why I’m Here to Stay

I’ve seen both sides, industry and consulting. And I can honestly say, consulting isn’t what I expected. It’s even better. At BrightWolves, I’ve found a place where I can make an impact, keep learning, and grow both professionally and personally.

If you’re considering the leap from industry to consulting, my advice is simple: Go for it. You might just find you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
